2001-2011
Don Keough has generously supported the Keough Interns in Ireland. The very first of them, Fr Sean McGraw CSC, worked with Alan Dukes, the former leader of Fine Gael, the Irish political party, way back in 1996. Sean is still immersed in contemporary Irish politics and teaching at the University of Notre Dame. Since then, Keough Interns have served in a variety of prominent Irish institutions – the Departments of Foreign Affairs and Justice, The National Gallery of Ireland, Poetry Ireland (the organisation dedicated to developing, supporting and promoting poetry throughout Ireland), Pavee Point, Comhaltas Ceoiltéoiri Éireann (promoting Irish traditional music), Foras na Gaeilge ( promoting the Irish langauge), the European Union Commission, the Pavilion Theatre, the Chester Beatty Library, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Fianna Fáil, the Irish Film Archive, on an archaeological excavation in the Boyne Valley, with the American financial company SEI Investments, the Combat Poverty Agency, and the EU Presidency Planning Section, of the Department of Foreign Affairs.
The generosity of Ireland Council members makes it possible to award six internships in Dublin to promising rising seniors each summer. These Irish internships place Notre Dame Juniors in positions in Dublin relating to politics, commerce, culture and social service, allowing talented ND students to participate in various work environments., Internships last for seven weeks each summer during which time the students are under the guidance of an Internship Co-ordinator at the Keough-Naughton Centre, Dublin. Successful candidates receive a round-trip airfare from the United States to Ireland, accommodation, and a living stipend for the duration of their stay. Before the end of July the Interns submit a written evaluation of their experience to the Director of the Keough Naughton Centre. All juniors with a demonstrated interest are encouraged to apply. Some internships are reserved for students minoring in Irish Studies.
