ND vs Navy

Sat Sep 1, 2012, 2:00PM - 6:00PM

Aviva Stadium, Dublin, Ireland

We are very much looking forward to welcoming you, your families, and your friends to Dublin for what promises to be a truly memorable weekend when ND play Navy at the Aviva Stadium on 1 September 2012.

The University of Notre Dame has now committed to a major programme of events around the game in Dublin. Highlights include a terrific event in the O2 – a hybrid of a ND Pep Rally and a great Irish all-star concert. We are also hoping to establish a Guinness World record at this event for the most bodhrans played at the same time. On Saturday morning ND will take over Temple Bar for a massive Tailgate. There will also be the opportunity to take part in volunteering opportunities, in pilgrimages to Glendalough and Croagh Patrick, to attend Irish Studies Lectures, to participate in a huge open-air Mass in Dublin city centre, and in many other special events. We in the Keough Naughton Centre in Dublin will also have a very special programme reserved for our alums only. By the way there is also a football game on the Saturday!

To update you a little… There is already massive interest in the game. ND is predicting that a minimum 20,000 Domers will attend. The Irish Government, the city of Dublin and our wonderful benefactors the Naughton family are all committed to ensuring that this will be a memorable event.

We have secured rooms at UCD student residences for our Dublin Domers, frieNDs and family. As most of you know, UCD is just a short ten-minute bus ride to the city centre via a direct route: it is also within easy walking distance of the Aviva Stadium where the game will be played. On-site facilities include a pharmacy, medical centre, banks, post office, delicatessens, newsagent, gym, laundrette and mini-markets. There are SIX single en-suite bedrooms in each apartment. All accommodation has self-catering facilities, including kitchen/living room. Features include: modern furnished apartments with en-suite toilet and shower in each bedroom – generous sized living area, including a fitted kitchen/dining area – free WiFi – secure controlled access to each apartment.

If you choose to stay at UCD for the football weekend, you will have the option of booking an entire six-bed apartment OR booking individual rooms. Each room is single occupancy only. Allocations will be made by UCD on a first come first served basis. The cost per room is $50 – vastly cheaper than hotel rates. Check-in is available on or before Thursday 30 August. A minimum of 3 nights stay is required. Rooms must be vacated on Sunday 2 September at 10am. Online reservations will open soon and we will send you the precise details once we get them from UCD.

Interested in staying at UCD?

Please email us outlining how many rooms you require, so that we can estimate the number of rooms that we should reserve in the Dublin Domer wing.

Please be advised that hotel accommodation in Dublin on that weekend is already very limited, so you need to pay careful attention to your accommodation needs. In our opinion, UCD will be the cheapest option by far for this trip.

If you would rather stay for a longer period of time, then we recommend that you contact Karen Mulvaney. Karen is our recommended short-term property hire agent in Dublin. For private accommodation requirements within the city or for vacationing in the countryside, contact Karen directly at karen@buyersagent.ie. Karen can help with everything from top-of-the-range houses to more affordable options.

We strongly advise you to book your flights as soon as possible. We anticipate that at least 20,000 ND people will be flying in to Dublin for the game so it is imperative that you book early to avoid disappointment. Remember that the Monday after the game is Labor Day in the US, giving you a little more scope for an extended stay in Dublin.

We are putting together a special dedicated programme of events exclusive to Dublin Domers. The nominated Dublin Domers bar for the Tail Gate will be Porterhouse Central and we hope that many of you will meet us there the morning of the game. Our special Dublin Domers day will be Sunday 2 September, when OC staff will be able to give our alums our undivided attention. Highlights include: Alum Brunch, a hike in Howth, an evening at Drumleck, hosted by Fergal and Rachel Naughton, including our Celtic Twilight concert. Drumleck, one of the finest houses in Dublin, is the private residence of Fergal and Rachel Naughton. It occupies a magnificent site on the shoulder of Howth Head, has gorgeous gardens and commands a superb view over Dublin Bay.

Each Dublin Domer will be able to bring ONE guest with them to this programme.

Due to anticipated high volumes of ND family visiting O’Connell House, we will be running scheduled tours of the house every 30 minutes from 12 noon until 5pm each day (Thursday through Friday). Online bookings for these tours will open soon. It will be impossible for us to handle casual drop-ins. You will understand that we will be run off our feet at that time. Please feel free to book the tour. We’d love to see you all again coming to the OC. The Sunday and Monday after the game will be the best time for OC staff to spend quality time with our Dublin Domers.

The Father Peyton Centre of the Holy Cross Family Ministries invites the wider ND community to visit their centre in picturesque Attymass, located in the heart of Mayo. The Centre is hosting a communal ND Family Pilgrimage. We will climb Croagh Patrick, with mass to be celebrated on the mountain top. This will be followed by a reception at the Fr. Peyton Centre, based on the theme of ‘home, hearth and spirituality’, culminating with a delicious BBQ. For those interested, email eclowry@nd.edu or visit fatherpeytoncentre.ie

The formal alumni schedule kicks off on Friday afternoon and runs until Sunday evening. Schedule will be posted soon.

We will gladly answer any specific queries that you may have. Contact us at eclowry@nd.edu or phone +353 1 611 0611.
