O'Connell House, 58 Merrion Square, Dublin 2

As summer draws to a close, Merrion Square opens up. On Saturday the 30th August the houses on Merrion Square open their doors for the annual Merrion Square Open Day, a Heritage Week event. Throughout the day there will be talks, tours, concerts, films, exhibitions, happenings, surprises and a pop-up tea shop to delight visitors to the Square.

This is a wonderful opportunity to get behind the Georgian doors on perhaps Dublin’s most elegant garden square. For some houses, this is the only day on which they are open to the public during the year.

There will be tours of No.58, O’Connell House, (Sign up here: home of Daniel O’Connell, a private view of the Merrion Hotel’s art collection, and fashion and conservation tours of the Square. The College of Anaesthetists will hold a lecture on the ‘History of Anaesthesia’ along with a demonstration at their hi-tech training centre.

The Irish Architectural Archive, the largest house on the Square, is hosting two exhibitions, photographs of Parnell Square and a celebration of the 200th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the GPO.

There will be family tours and events at the National Museum of Ireland – Natural History, the National Gallery and the National Print Museum. The newly opened playground in Merrion Square Park is also great way to entertain the small people in your life. Vestibule, A Summer of Sculpture on the Square continues in the Park.

See how the Georgians lived, both above and below stairs, with a visit to No.29, the ESB’s Georgian House Museum. Visit the restored Georgian garden at the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, No.63, and enjoy their pop-up tea shop.

This is just a small sample of what is on offer during the day. All of the events are free, with some requiring tickets. Tickets are available by logging on to Eventbrite
