THE INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL ON JOHN MCGAHERN

The International Summer School on John McGahern combines the annual International Seminar on John McGahern (July 21 – 23) with a subsequent week (July 24 – 30) of intensive classes and workshops on McGahern’s work and related areas in creative writing. All events and classes will be held in County Leitrim, in the heart of John McGahern country.

Students will attend all lectures and sessions during the Seminar and will have been allocated related projects in advance. There will be two class/workshop sessions per day during the Summer School week: 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon, and 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. The academic faculty will include Professor Denis Sampson, author of Outstaring Nature’s Eye: The Fiction of John McGahern; Dr Stanley van der Ziel, editor of McGahern’s Love of the World: Essays; and Dr Frank Shovlin of the Institute of Irish Studies at the University of Liverpool. Guest writers, including Kevin Barry, Martin Dyar, Mike McCormack and Belinda McKeon will discuss the creative as well as critical implications of McGahern’s legacy. Historian Liam Kelly will give a feature talk on the local dimensions of McGahern’s thought and work. Any required reading will be indicated in advance by the Programme Director – multiple copies of all McGahern’s books will also be available for consultation in the Summer School library. There will also be an opportunity to experience local social and cultural events.

International Scholarships

National University of Ireland Galway has announced that a number of tuition scholarships have been provided to support international students wishing to attend the International Seminar and Summer School on John McGahern in County Leitrim during 21-30 July, 2011.
The scholarships are designed for students at senior and graduate levels and researchers who are interested in the writings of John McGahern, his life and times in 20th-century Ireland, and related aspects of creative writing. Tuition Scholarships will be valued at €400 ($550) each.
Interested students may apply directly to the Summer School Office. Applications should be accompanied by a submission of approximately 500 words giving the basis for scholarship application.
